            | JeffL | Dillsburg, PA | I have a pumpkin 38inches at 13 days that would have grew over the main vine. I had to cut about 10 ft off the vine past the pumpkin and the cut was made 3inches past the stem. Is there anything that I could put on the vine where I had to cut it. I put dacanel on and was wondering if I should seal it with something. Jeff | 7/27/2003 10:05:55 AM |

            | huffspumpkins | canal winchester ohio | If you can get some Captan powder to sprinkle on it that would help, if not some sulfer powder will do also. | 7/27/2003 10:26:21 AM |

            | Desert Storm | New Brunswick | Huh...I have pumpkins sitting on the main vine and never thought anything about it. Should I do something? In fact most of mine are sitting on their vines. | 7/27/2003 2:18:20 PM |

            | JeffL | Dillsburg, PA | I would assume that the pumpkin can be damaged by sitting on the vine also the vine could suffer big time and you would not be able to cut the tap roots causing stem stress. I fugured that my plant is pretty big and I have a secondary nearing 23 ft so I am hoping this does not kill the plant and pumpkin.I believe that the pumpkin gets all the juice from the front so the 10ft that I cut off should not matter that much, hopefully? | Wes@PA | Chester Co., PA | I like to use Tree Seal, an asphalt based goo that is used when pruning trees. Just smear some on the cut and when it dries it forms a water and germ proof seal.
If your vine was in the wrong position with the pumpkin sitting on it, it might have torn the stem off the pumpkin.

            | BrentW | Utah ([email protected]) | I also use Tree Seal/Pruning Sealer. It comes in a very convenient aerosol (spray) can. | 7/28/2003 1:41:23 AM |

            | JeffL | Dillsburg, PA | Well I ended up using bathroom sealer. It seems to work and dries quickly. The pumpkin is still growing so hopefully by sunday day 20 I will be at 60inches. Measured 42 today. Thanks, Jeff | 7/28/2003 9:25:03 AM |

            | docgipe | Montoursville, PA | Scabing over or healing is best done in open air with a puff of fungicide for good luck. When you use coverings of any nature you increase the time it takes to heal. Dry air is the best healer. | 7/28/2003 10:23:26 AM |

            | Bushwacker | Central Connecticut | Has anyone used the tree sealer on vine splits? with or without success. | 7/28/2003 12:07:47 PM |

            | docgipe | Montoursville, PA | A fungicide powder is the best healer. Use it dry or make a paste to plaster on. This fights off fungus while the plant heals in open dry air. Any dry fungicide would be fine. | 7/28/2003 3:26:18 PM |
