Also, if you wouldn't mind adding some crosses, maybe Joze could let us know if we are on track!!!!

I donte believe in true hybrid vigor amongst what people are growing today.

I don't think it exists in any 935 Lloyd x 865 Mettler cross, lots of 674.5 Waterman on both sides.

Beachy why dont you come over here and tell that to my face? Me and you are gonna have it out...my patch...friday at 4:30. Be there or be square.
Seriously tho...I believe there may be some degree of hybrid vigor (note the word "some") in a few of the crosses available today. Its a pretty neutral stance, i know.

If the world record keeps going up by 80 lbs. to 100 lbs. per year and the average weight at weigh offs each fall keeps increasing. Does'nt that count for some vigor? Hybrid or not. Maybe I'm wrong or misunderstanding the theory. I think it Yes.........p.s. I'm wrong a lot...........Dean o

My vote is definitely on the "vigor" side. IMHO some plants are geneticaly disposed to grow bigger faster (fruit devolopement included) while others are not. Lets face it though, AG's are hybrids to start so the "vigor" would be sporatic to say the least(some seeds have it while others dont, even out of the same pumpkin. In theory if you linecross (inbreed) two seperate lines for several generation, getting totally different characteristics in each, (consistently) then outcross the two, I believe your percentage of seeds containing H.V. would be greatly increased. Ever grow two plants from the same pumpkin, same plot, same fertilizer program and one does insanely well while the other languishes?....My bet is H.V has played a role.

Tom, I did not plant your 1097.5 purchased from the Ohio Folks. Went instead with 1097.8 TC. Most anyone can see my choice is based on numerical somethings.
It is however interesting that each time I handle your seed the container vibrates and a foul odor escapes. Is not that hybred vigor sticking up for it's maker? Guess it may be the git up and go from the other side of the genetic family. ]:o)

I'll take Tom cause if I'm right Joe is married and may have to lay down to stop a second beating from the wife...........Just joking. I can't help on this subject have read lots of stuff on it including Joe's and it's still way over my head. Anyhow hybred sounds to much like inbred and thats a southern thing.......Oops not you southern I mean a south ern thing ya know not all the way to the east coast but close ya know were they have no need for tooth brushes ya know.......Oh heck never mind
