Yes, thats a lofty title but it has to be done. Something occurred to me today that has never been brought to my attention previously. When measuring and recording your fruit, how do you count your days? Does the pollination date equal day one or day zero? I am under the assumption that the pollination date is equal to day zero. Here's the logic- a baby isnt one year old until it has been around for a year. Make sense? Thought so. What do you all think? This confusion and inconsistency could cause some problems when comparing young fruit growth rate. How bout we standardize this process. Great, thanks.

Of course that is only accurate if you measure each day at the same time in the morning it was pollinated.

24 hours after pollination should be the entry for day 1. Pollination time is entry for day zero. Agreed.

Pollution Day Zero? what month and day is it going to be on? i need to mark it on my calender if we`re going to agree to make it a holiday. 4th of July has fireworks, Christmas has gift giving, T-day has the bird, New years day has the hangover, what are we supposed to do for our new Pollution Day Zero holiday? gather `round a camp fire of old tires and styrofoam and burn the plastic insulation off copper wires while dumping our RV toilet tanks in the nearby creek? maybe we should tone it down some. we don`t want this holiday to be bigger than martin luther king day do we? how about just tossing trash out of our car windows and farting?

I would think pollination day is zero day, as it takes 24 hours or so for the whole process to finalize, right?

It appears as though the majority agrees pollination day is day zero. I also recieved correspondence from Mr. Record keeper himself, Al Eaton, that it is indeed day zero. Looks like the issue has been resolved! Thanks guys.

OK men, just to clarify: for the female I pollinate on the 790 Daletas early on 6-30 morning, day 20 is the 7-20 or 7-21? As I understand what I read ahead, it should be considered 7-21, shouldn't it? If so, I was doing it wrong, because I took measures the 20th.

20th is right for day 20 for you. It was 1 day July 1, 2 days July 2, and so on...

sooo, back to the baby human issue.... if the baby was conceived on January 1st at 12:00:01 AM,: when it is born, is it day 0 or is its age the number of days since it was conceived?? i think this would mess up all of our birthdays in a second.!.! okay, back to pumpkins...
as Joel Holland would say: ......"days from a blossom"........

i counted day one as the day i pollinated. pollination on 6-29 is now 20 days old on july 18th and my 7-3 pollination is 16 days old. i have been measuring at night, so i am leaving my numbers and days alone on my growth charts. then on day 25 i will switch to measuring in the morning and get back on track.

to compare with the human baby issues, the anti-abortionists would have us believe that when a sperm enters the ova a complete single cell is created and life begins. compared with plants, that would be when pollen enters the stigma. however, if a single pollen grain entering the stigma creates a complete cell,(life) is it that moment that life begins for a pumpkin? (Day Zero start) or is it completely irrelevent since life from that cell won`t be realized until the cell(seed) is planted next year? think about it for a moment before you answer. a pollen grain doesn`t create this pumpkins life upon joining with a stigma. it creates a seed. a seed inside our pumpkin that has no influence on this pumpkins life or genetic make-up .if you still think life creation begins at that moment, then when does life creation stop? and should we consider the time duration of hundreds of pollens entering the female. it`s not like an instantaeous creation of a single seed determining the birth of this new pumpkin. remember that each pollen is only good for one seed and there are hundreds of seeds being created in the female. if this duration involves hours or even days,(the time it takes for ALL pollen grains to enter the female) then our 24 hour "Day Zero" could possibly be a 36 or even a 48 hour "Day Zero"!! personally though, i choose to believe, what the hell does it matter??? heeee haaaaw
