Subject: S-curve in the main

I understand the whole concept of S-curve. However, does one begin S-curving when the females begin showing....or do you wait until the fruit is set and then begin S-curving? I broke a main trying to S-curve before the female was ready for pollination.

myself i s curved at about cantalop size a little each day by simply pulling the fruit forward a little each day.

Just so I can get more plant length in a smaller area, I start curving soon after it begins to vine.
