Sure you have observed how the pumpkin leaves get massive size where the secondaries are deadheaded. So, how about deadhead the main vine after the keeper, once it has reached a size that makes us feel quiet about aborting? For instance 60".

some growers do that and are successful with it. Others do not. They think the tip of the main acts as a shock absorber and will help prevent the fruit from spliting.
