There have been alot of good threads lately but the thing I hate most is when the good ones aren't on the first page anymore. I know it's no big deal just wanted to say that:)

maybe john could change a setting so there are 25 or 30 on a page? of course in his "spare time" lol

Or the most informative threads could be placed into new forum like the very best of, hot topics,… (for example when the number of different participants exceeds 20)

You can do this yourself by changing your screen settings in "my computer".
Some message forum boards automatically move a thread back to the top as soon as a reply is posted. Those with few or no replies get pushed off by those with more activity.
Others I've seen allow the user to define the viewing of threads. Newest to oldest (age of thread) such as here. Or by most recent post (age of post). This is quite handy if the reset button is simple.
But if the boards become too complicated to use then some might not use them. I know at least a couple growers who are already "read only". And even then only when someone else logs them on.
Just some thoughts.
