I have a female flower about to open about 4 feet from the stem, is that too close to grow a pumpkin? Should I polinate it and see what I get or should I let it go and wait for another female to open up a little further down?

I'd wait for another further down the main. 4 feet isnt very far out. You still have a week or so of "golden pollination time" left. Im guessing your plant isnt very large if the female is just opening at 4 feet. Another weeks worth of growth couldnt hurt.
