Were the fruits on the same plant? Same vine? The fruits that are ok were they on the same plants or different plants?

I think John D had some pictures of some explosions in last year's diary.
I think this was attributed to a growth spurt and too much Nitrogen fert.

Fruits are on the main stalk, and on the separate plantations, here is the other information, it is true that I fertilized them with the 20-20-20.

you need consistancy with daily water and fertilizers so as to avoid any growth spurt. as well some times it's genetics. and many (not me ) say you should have at least 1 shock absorber (other fruit) on your plant on side vines, allow only to get to basket ball size then set a new one and remove the old. as well pick a consistant shaped fruit with no dips or early creases (check stem for this to)

If the fruits were about softball size they likly aborted the pollination.

Some times it can be the plant. Had two plants side by side a couple of years ago, both received the exact same treatment, yet one kept exploding its pumpkins.

The only explosion I have witnessed was caused by a two fold growers error. Patch got dried out due to a brief period of non-watering. Heavy dose of granular 20-20-20 added and then naturally watered. The plant sucked this all in and made an excessive growth attempt. BANG!!!
I would really like to witness one of these....but please Dear Lord not, in my patch. :)
Sorry you had an explosion. Due to the fact you had several I think the message may be over fertilization.

My fruits also exploded! The stem cracked several times into the fruit. The basic reason I think is that the plant limited the virus infection and suddenly started to grow heavily… BOOOM!
About over fertilization – probably only N may be the problem?
And another question: what are the chances of a fruit at basket ball size with cracked stem to grow problem free?
