I need help. The tip of one of my main vines broke about 8 inches from the tip. I don't know how it happened. It is plenty long, not measured but at least 12 feet in length. It broke between two leaf nodes and the last remaining leaf node has my one and only main vine female bud on it. One, how should I get a new main vine (take a secondary from the stump or train one from the tip of the main). And two, what should I do with the female bud that's at the end of the broken main? Cull it, or try to grow a pumpkin at the end of a vine?

Brigitte, I would still pollinate that female. The vine might continue to grow. Try to get a pumpkin set on a secondary. Good luck Dean o

I would start turning the last secondary to become the main. In this case I would not remove vines from that one secondary. Think you will recover nicely. I would treet the broken main with a shot of captan and step back. It may heal for you. Good luck.

brigette, it happened to me too, once by the plant simply growing straight up and once by me trying to make an s curve. i let the secondary right before the snap grow in one case to be the new main, and in the other i had a female blossum 4' before the snap. in this case i trained the 2nd secondary in from the snap on the opposite side of my pumpkin to curve around and straight out to act like a main for extra leaf purposes and to fill the remainder of the patch. i also will pollinate a female on the first secondary side vine off the stump area. instead of deadheading this sidevine, i am gonna allow it to slip behind the plant next to it and let it continue to grow like another main, but will pinch all secondaries because there will be no room for them.

well, the female is on the last node before the snap, so I'll attempt to train out the closest secondary behind that, I also have a few long secondaries closer to the stump that I might set fruit on. Play it by ear.
