For those of you with canines...have you ever had your dog(s) run thru the patch and break the tips off your main or secondaries? Ever had 'em chew the tips?
I've lost 5 plants in the last 3 years by one of those 2 methods. This year I put electric fence around my main house patches but I still have 3 plants in my front yard that are unprotected. I have 11 dogs so this is a major concern at my house.
TIP...put large coffee cans over the tips and move them as the main grows. Works better than getting angry and shooting one of the mutts!

I'd like to hear any other suggestions if anyone has them, thanks.

Our lab is rambunctious. We put up a chicken wire fence. My pumpkins would be chewed, ran over, laid on, and probably dead if it wasn't for the fence.

Hey Southern Man, I grew an 800#er on the spot where the previous owner of our house buried their dog. It's worth thinking about anyway ;0)

I had a problem with "Missy" a prestegous untrained minature of some description. She likes the fish. I tried training her to no end. Last time she showed up I was mixing a batch of fish and kelp. Sent her home with a good dose of that. She has not been out and about since.

My goodness I was sorry. I just did not see her sneaking in where I was working that time. ]:o)

Meat's too tough, gets caught between your teeth too.

I woke up this morning to a plant chewed off at the very stem beginning. I have 18 dogs. They left it alone until now.

And my wife thinks I blame my mistakes on the dogs...pull out the Mossberg!

Southern,
Do you leave the coffee cans on through the day? Please be careful as I assume the metal cans could really heat up.

I have deer and other varments - most come out at night. I cover my vine tips with pots (~10"). But it is very high maintenance as I have to put them on at night and take them off in the morning. The occasional overlooked pot has left me with burned leaves.

ps. I have a fence arount the patch and still cover the tips at night as a backup.
