yo folks. Well this year im growing some big max's with my ag's. The seedsd dont have very good genes because they are from a 52lber last year. Does anyone know if big max's can get as big as AG's and has anyone grown them very bigg?

Not a chance, to get a big bump and you must grow Atlantic Giants Copper

Ive grown big max as well, and never had a fruit over 100lbs. They are basically just oversized-carvers.

Let's not be so narrow-minded folks. Aren't there reports of big pumpkins prior to Dill? Granted, they are rare, but to say this is the only way is a bit presumptuous.
I for one take issue with everyone growing the same genetics using the same books. Kind of why we all get the same results. Actually it aggravates me a great deal; just haven't figured my way out of it yet.

Remeber Big Max is a store bought seed without much potential. If you spend as much time with this sort as Howard Dill did in the 80ies, you might have a big(ger) max in 10 years or so...

Doesn't have to come from a BM, and it certainly could take as long as a decade to get another line going. All I was trying to point out is we need to keep the possibilities open.

1337 is a huge possibility when your talking pumpkins. Kind of like putting one of those new electric cars in a nascar race. Sure they will finish the race, after the other racers have gone home..:) I grew Big Max's most of my life. The biggest I ever got was 120 lbs. I do that in 20 days now.

I grew a 139.8 Big max in 2001 my first year ever growing pumpkins. I believe it could have reached 200 lbs if i had the experience I do now. I grew the 139.8 seed in 2002 and grew a 120 est with no effort and on 150 sqft plant. It was pollinated with the 922.5 Emmons. I am growing the 120 Frantz this year it so far it is proving to be a very huge and agressive plant. I have high hopes for it!!!!!! Good luck. Mike Frantz

Before someone points out the fact, negatively Mike, that you crossed the BM with an AG, I have read where people chalk all of Dill's success up to the fact that he crossed a pumpkin with the hubbard squash. Now that sounds like over simplification, but I don't want your experiment negated in the COPO...

Thanks for the interesting info guys. Funnydad, you think there are some that might not like me polinating the Big Max with AG? LOL! I thought it would be something fun to do and I look forward to watching the crosses (120 Frantz) results. Should make a large, orange and round pumpkin. How about hybrid vigor??!!??!!??!!??!! Hey what does COPO mean? What is a Hubbard squash? Did Dill ever say if that was true? Mike Frantz

Court Of Public Opinion. Good info Borer, matfox. All I was saying, again, was as long as we all stick with the same path, the end results will be the same within a narrow variance. Wasn't saying anyone would care about the cross, they would say you essentially "cheated" by crossing a BM with an AG to get a larger size.
Not that there's anything WRONG with that, just an observation.

COPO.... Thanks for the info. SO you think there may be a chance it may throw large???!!!!! I hope so! Isn't it all of our mission to get the largest pumpkin we can no matter what it takes? I guess I never though that I would receive any negative thoughts for doing this... just something for fun. I tell you what though, this plant is still young but is looking VERY healthy, large and all around perfect. Im more interested in seeing what the fruit will do.
