I am trenching and then back fiiling as the vine grows, but how close to the new growth do you bury? I am staying about a foot behind the new growth is this to close?

That is excellent except if the weather is very hot and the vine tries to grow up away from the soil. In that case give it a little more open space. What it may be trying to do is get away from hot reflected sun with it's most tender new growth.

Is it absolutely necessary to bury vines? If so do you bury the whole length till a couple of feet from the end then? or do it sporadically...as just over the places where there are leaves growing? I have been reading my pumpkin growing book but so far some things are as clear as mud. I have a little female blossem coming on the end of mine...and I don't want to upset her....
