For some reason I couldnt post to Mallorn so here is my situation..Right before I finished putting together the shade tents for tips of my main vines, I noticed that the tip on my 1096 Glasier seemed to be fused in the center and hard. I put the shade up anyways but now it is pretty clear that the tip has stopped growing at about 10 feet. Here are a few questions that i have:

1.) I assume I should train the closest secondary around to the front....is this correct?
2.) I have a female set to open in several days about 9 feet out on the main...should I stick with this one even though it is about a week too early because it is on the main or wait to set something further down on a secondary main?
3.) Is there a generally accepted range agreed upon by growers in which fruit growth is optimized on the main vine? on a secondary?

Thanks Everyone...I really appreciate any help or advice you have to offer!!

I would wait to see if maybe the tip will grow. Sometime new growth appears out of damaged tips. time will tell.

if no new growth appears - then yes use a 2ndary to take over. it doesn't have to be the next closest, but if that looks like a good vine then it is easest to use it. if you go farther back to take one then you might have to do more training of vines to get the plant back to growing the shape you want.

I would pollinate the female on the main. you can always pollinate others later and then choose. but typically fruit on the main do better. optimal length out ... 10 to 15 ft.

ps- I think you should always post here over mallorn! :)

I'd pollinate & wait at the same time. You could cull later if location is poor. And that tip could wake up again too.

Can you start training that secondary gently without letting it root down? If you can keep it elevated a little, you'll still have a choice if that main starts growing again. Maybe some small forked tree branches to hold the vine up enough to keep the ariel roots out of the soil for a couple days.

How's that 1096 Glasier otherwise. I have a few that I passed over for fear of the "unproven" thing. How's the heat tolerance & growth?

Tremor...the 1096 Glasier only begins to wilt around 90+ degrees. Yesterday we were up to 95 degrees and only mild wilt occured. I have been a slacker on keeping growth records but in the last couple days it has grow 6-9 inches per day! However, that growth has come to a near complete stop as the tip is near completely uncoiled. We had major storms yesterday which shook up a couple secondaries to say the least. The main on my 963 Stucker was beaten up pretty bad too...not too much damage at the tip but the last 3-4 feet before it was twisted up pretty bad. On the bright side...I got lucky that nothing was snapped off. I fertilized with nitro fertilizer along with fish and kelp..hopefully that will help

Has anyone ever had a main regenerate new growth at the tip or "wake up" as Tremor said?
