Can somebody tell me the difference between how to sib pollinate as opposed to self pollinating a plant?

self pollinating is using male flowers from a plant to pollinate a female on that same plant.
sib - means you have two plants that came from two seeds that came from the same pumpkin. -ie- you have two 846 Calai plants. then you pollinate a female on one plant with males from the other. sib comes from siblings. the two plants are both "children" from the same pumpkin.

Now that that question was answered, I was wondering what some of the genetics guys thought about sib vs self. Which if either might be better when and why? Mike Frantz

Each cross is different. Even from the same parents and in the same plant. Lot of luck involved plus weather conditions, plant health, stress, time of the day, etc. You don't know what those seeds are going to show until you plant and grow them. Even seeds from the same fruit give different plants in the same garden. One think is sure, if a plant has any particular problem, I wouldn't self it. But we have to plan and play... Why not?

If you are trying to bring out a specific trait in a plant/fruit, then selfing is the best way to do that. Sibbing is just a "toned down" self. Personnally, I dont see any real advantages to sibbing, from a genetic standpoint. Crosses are meant to creat a degree of vigor, and selfing is meant to purify. Therefore sibbing kind of falls in the middle of the road and doesnt really have a place. Its not that I discourage sibbing, its just that I dont see its place in breeding.
