Here's my question of the day. Do most of you bury the main vine right along the leading tip as it grows or behind it a foot or two? On average, how deep?

I bury the main once the secondaries are far enough out to no be affected by the pilling of dirt. Usually keep about a foot or so of the main clear at all times. This lets you see how the secondaries are forming and any male flowers too.

I bury the vine back foot or two. The vine is still elongating in that first bit and burying it too soon may cause a problem. Just mark a little pumpkin from where you first notice it. By the time it blooms it may be a foot away from where you first saw just because of vine elongation. I just shovel some dirt on it so its probably only buried about 2-3 inches at the most. Just need enough so that the roots at the nodes have something to grow into. Some people wont bury the main only secondaries.

I Just pile a very small amount of dirt at the root nodes so the main is still vivible. This way I can keep an eye on the main vine. If the main vine goes, so does any hopes of a good pumpkin. If a side vine has problems, just a lost side vine.

today i had to uncover 6` of vine for slack on both sides of my pumpkin. i only cover about 2" deep, but i cover the whole vine. every node had half a dozen roots thick as a pencil growing straight down into the dirt. tough as rope. i just covered it less than 2 weeks ago. they grow mui rapido. i believe i could probably cut off a few feet of vine and it could sustain itself with those roots!
