This was just brought up to me that sunflower roots may produce a substance that inhibits other root growth. Has anyone else heard of this? Thanks, Ben

Probably my problem Ben. I have a bunch of sunflowers growing around my patch and I am bummed by the lack of AG growth.

yes, but if you grow them as a windbreak on the edge of your patch 3or more ft away from the pumpkin stump you should be fine

I always heard it was the seed shells that caused the problem....that's why you never see grass under a bird feeder...maybe it's the whole plant?...awful lot of people post pictures of them as windbreaks...guess they're farther off the patch.

The word you are looking for is allelopathy. Do a search on on the web with sunflowers and allelopathy. You will find its both the hulls and the plants.

Had a row of sunflowers within 4 feet of a row of pumpkins last year; didn't cause any trouble at all.

Had two hues and a juniper finished or well established size. All three were grossly effected by the sunflower seed below the feeder I had established above or beside them. That was my first lesson. As to growing sunflowers I never noticed any significant retardent action from the presence of the plant.

I don't think so men. I have now 10 feet high giant sunflower in the upper garden and nice big watermelon plants, deliquata squash, cucumber and melons are growing fine just under them.

This is true Sunflowers produce chemicals that hinder growth of other plants.

hate to be stubborn, but possible it is related to the sub-species of sun flower in question? I didn't post them to my diary last year, but I would be glad to provide pics of 6-8 sunflowers, about 25 in a row, nearly hanging over pumpkin plants. Plants showed no effects and did fine.

Until this year I grew 10-12' tall sunflowers as windbreaks righ amongst the plants. Never noticed a problem with the plants that wasn't my fault.
