This might be a stupid question. What causes the vines to grow thick? Is it a genetic characteristic? My 712 kuhn vines are not overly thick and my 611.5 hester plant's main is thicker. Does vine thickness have a bearing in fruit size. What could enhance vine thickness?

I believe this is a genetic trait, and I do not believe that it has any bearing on size. My 712 was similar to yours, and I've had plants with very thick vines. My largest fruit was grown on a plant with very skinny vines.

As far as vine enhancement, I believe there may be a way to manipulate cell growth with PGR's but i dont think you could do much with fertilizers and the like.

an interesting note is that a vine with set fruit will grow larger than a vine with out a set fruit. so that leads to the question.... should we try to set fruit on all our vines to increase vine size, then later cull all those extra fruit? would this help to get the "juices flowing" more and add to a larger fruit at the end of the season ?

Gordon,,secondaries on the 600 that did not have a fruit set on were as big as secs which had fruit set for a short time..Secondaries were as big as main vine..Almost big as a pepsi can.I have asked this question a few times,,but never seem to get an answer..How big was main vine which produced WR's?? Joze,,another good point,,does vine size affect size of fruit? I would think so,,the main vein in a huge main would be bigger allowin more food to go to fruit??? If no,,why?

My 1097.8 TC started to look like a double vine. Now at the four foot plus stage it had decided to be just a single. One of our judgement problems is that we have few facts in any significant numbers to draw conclusions from. Since we really don't know it is always....WHAT'S NEXT TIME!!!

Logic would tell you that a larger vine should produce a larger fruit, however there really is no way to prove this is true. A baseball sized vine clearly has more xylem and phloem then a golf ball sized vine, but one has to consider how quickly nutrients are flowing through these veins. And thats something I cant touch.

What size vine has the most fruit "explosions" If in fact a larger vine delivers more nutrients to fruit, It would seem to me that a smaller vine might be better.
