you know i hear alot about "serious" growers doing this or that or blablabla well i know some people who are so serious that they just aint no fun to be around..but what if they threw a few pumpkin seeds in the ground, the plants came up but they never tended to them at all..would they still be considered a serious grower??on the other hand take me for example..i dont have a serious bone in my body(if you didnt already know)but i do try and grow my plants to the fullest, would i be considered a non serious grower??? if god didnt love us he wouldnt have given us beer.. ben franklin

Serious Schmerious. You cant define a grower by his level of seriousness. Whoever uses that term to describe growers is a pud. You cant be in this hobby without some sort of humor. People ask me why i do this hobby and I tell em "cuz i just love GIANT MELONS" hehe, if you know what i mean. And then i describe my pollination procedure (all in a serious, scientific manner mind you) to my family members, and here they are telling me im humping pumpkins, and they do the pelvic motion, as if im intimatley involved with these flowers. Am i a serious grower? I dont think so, id rather call it "focused"

Woe'sa there! I figure any dude that comes here and stays is exercising some kind of seriousness.
This past year like many of you I gave seed to at least a dozen dudes who were all wizzed up. I won't do that again. My new approach will be and I here-in list it: "Here is a bit of printed help in prepairing your patch to grow one of these gentle giants". "Call me for advise if you like". "When you feel you are ready I will help you get a seed started".
None of last years new "would be's" came to this sight. None have broken ground. That is the way it is. I have found a friend or two locally who are serious growers. We talk at least weekly and all come here for help and ideas.
I did have to expand the term "locally" to be the whole state and beyond. You might be the crown prince, of pumpkin comedy but if you are here, to me, your presence is far above average. I would call you a serious grower. We need more serious pumpkin comedy. Don't see much of that either!

You are not a serious grower before you quit your job, leave your wife, ban children and relatives, cut your phone and run into your patch to go Nesbitt. Since noone does we are all unserious beginners:-)

Black Cloud- would "dedicated grower" be a better term for us to use? then people you refer to could be serious people and non-dedicated growrs. and you could be a non-serious yet dedicated grower. we could make fun of the non-dedicated growers regardless of their seriousness. it's all in the semantics... is serious easier to define than dedicated ? better break out the lawyers ... it depends on what the meaning of "serious" is or "dedicated" is ... sounds even worse than 'it depends on what the meaning of "is" is. ' ... because serious and dedicated have more letters.

I offer the term: PUMPKINOLOGIST, one who grows and studies pumpkin. Who will be the first to do that to a T-Shirt? Mark me down for two EL's. :)

i`ve been reading and posting here about a year and a half. in all that time the ONLY words i`ve ever written in seriousness are in my diary(about half) and a few lines on my misting system. other than that, EVERY word i`ve posted here was in jest. every one. the only thing i am serious about is having fun. the more serious the person, the more intent i become on poking fun at them. i forget that you can`t see me laughing as i write. and the more irked they become at my posts the harder i laugh. growing pumpkins is fun, and since the only thing i am serious about is having fun, i guess you could say i`m serious about pumpkins. now , lets go nuke something.

If most growers took it too serious, than there would be a lot of people hanging from the closest tree to the patch. I like to consider most pumpkin growers as fun- loving people who like to spend time in their gardens. I started growing a couple years ago and love the sport and the people I have meet along the way. Keep your chin up and your pants down.
