we had 3 days of cooler temps and clouds, then bam a nice sunny 80 degree day. the main on one of my plants in my secondary patch reached straight for the sky and the sun it had been missing. then a storm rolled in fast in the late afternoon with heavy rain. the main vine split half way through from the weight of the heavy rain after it reached straight up.
i have been burying vines and using bamboo stakes, but because of the quick growth and curved reaching vine, i lost my main and will now train the first secondary to be my new main vine.
so now i have been keeping a lot closer eye and i have been checking and moving bamboo stakes once in a.m. and once in p.m. also i place 4 stakes out ahead of vine sticking into the ground on almost a horizontal position just above where the vine will grow that day, which forces the vine to grow straight instead of up when it reaches each stake. i put the stakes about 2" apart so the vine can't slide between and then be forced to grow upwards.
i am glad this happened on a 3' vine instead of at about 8'. i still have plenty of time to train a new main and luckily it happened to a secondary patch plant.
it also happened 2 days after a feeding of fert/seaweed/fish so watch out for quick growth bursts after feeding days.
just a thought cuz it isn't a good feeling seeing your vine snapped in half.

The main on my 840 Desrosiers was doing the same....straight up and along came the wind. Needless to say I am also training a new main on this plant....OUCH!!!!
