i think that growers should form a way of marking seeds so fakes are hard to forage.

maybe they could sign one side along with a small serial # (containing weight, year, count. example ser. # 90003001 next would be 90003002 and so on). then take photos of the seeds to keep records. so if someone gets a seed he can email the original grower and ask for confirmation of it's authinticity by number and photo.

this may sound a bit much but i bet there are plenty of serios growers who would love to see this . (or suggest something else)

I received seeds with their pumpkin/squash weight and their seed number from people. So I knew I had the 238th seed.
I also received seeds with their pumpkin/squash weight and name on one side and good luck on the other side.
I really appreciated it.
So some of the growers are already doing this.
It is a GREAT idea.

Mr. T. Unfortunately that does not prevent anyone from writing anything on any seed. I usually do not talk without direction or idea. In this issue the jury is still out between my ears. I do not see any answer that would fix any better than a cheater being caught and revealed here as one or more has appeared.

Any one who loses the trust, of his fellow men, or ladies, in a situation like this, has a most difficult time, in recovery if, in fact, recovery is possible.

yes docgipe anyone could write anything on a seed but it would never match the serial # and photo from the records of the original grower. anyway i'll be marking my seeds thus so there will be no easy way to forge my seeds. not that anybody would want to.

I think T has a good idea. Of course abyone who wants to can start this ball rolling. Mr. T, are those 900 seeds dry yet? Every new idea is born somewhere. Why not right here & now?

Its real easy to come up with a simple code that people could not crack, thefore each seed can be identified. For instance, a grower could use odd numbers and even letters: 6B8DZ as a code. That way, if someone tried to devise their own code, chances are they would not follow the growers code. Of course, an imposter could just copy the code from a previous seed, with matching handwriting and a similar seed, but is there really any solution for circumventing that problem? I dont think so. But by coming up with your own code, you've at least taken care of part of the problem. Other ideas include unique colors of ink, maybe a sticker of sorts, a small personalized ink stamp, a glue dot...the possibilites for personalization are endless! Just be creative folks!
