I noticed you used a 3x5 card for scale in your most recent photos. That is a giant pumpkin faux pas. The only acceptable objects to use for scale are 12 oz beer bottles or cans. In an emegency, a pack of cigarettes may be substituted. The only exception to this rule is for Brian Hillebrand....he is allowed to use a Diet Vanilla Coke bottle which would normally be frowned upon.

Come on... anything that shows scale IS GOOD. I just happen to use beer bottles because I brew beer for a living. I just saw a few photos of your patch, to make your puny plants look big I suggest you use the 4.5 oz sappro beer can :-o .

I started laughing out loud when I read this post...I'm not 21 so I can't (legally...) use beer and I don't smoke; what am I supposed to use LOL??? I think different objects to show scale are fun and unique. Beer bottles, cans, etc. are great objects to use, but is just following the norm. I don't know about anyone else, but I like being original.

Sports balls make great scale comparisons too.

Basketball, Baseball, football etc.

Brent - this is a pretty good post.
LOL.

I like doc's dollar.
Now that we know Robert brews beer we know where the party is at the end of the growing season.
On some of my plants I would have to use quart beer bottles the plants would swallow the 12 ouncers.
LOL

Tom,

I think an 1100 pound pumpkin would be a little difficult to move from plant to plant but if you're up for it have at it;)

To those of you who are too young to drink: Go to a seedy part of town and start rummaging through the dumpster where all the drunks hang out. You should find a nice selection of bottles to use.

I'm sorry if you find the giant pumpkin scale protocol offensive. Don't shoot the messenger...I don't make the rules.

Blackcloud, The bottling machine where I work does 500 bottles per a minute. For those who do have a liver left and dont drink I find Anything that works to scale as very much acceptible: dollars, tapemeasure, yardsticks, 55 gallon drums, a riding mower....

Robert

And yes you should have seen the harvest party we had last year!!!

Guess we'll have to charge you.
What would be acceptable compensation for a giant pumpkin faux pas?

LOL...good point Az:) I just get a kick out of how many beer bottles find their way into the pictures. Obviously you can use whatever you want.

C&R,

Take it easy...it's okay....I was just kidding:D

I've consulted my lawyer on this matter & all involved will be subpoenaed shortly since I am terribly offended by the groups lack of political correctness. We are not amused!!!

Maybe it's time for an offical BigPumkins.com ruler or yard stick to be used for scale in all photo submissions so as not to offend anyone based on age, gender, race, political affiliation, ethnic origin, religion, sexual preference, or other "hot button".

I have a Polish Tape Measure with one black foot at the proper place and two black feet at twenty four and so on to three feet.

Please, being politically correct, I dare not share it on a public board. Someone might be offended. ]:o)

That would be a great idea Steve.
Maybe BG.com can make a little money off of it to support the site. Because we could purchase them (donations for each one we order)
They could have a picture of a pumpkin or whatever made up of a certain size that we could all use on our leaves. Then everyone would be able to judge the size of the leave/plant because we could all purchase these picture measurement pumpkins or whatever they choose to use and it would really give us uniform measurement.

You could use anything you wanted to scale size. Although it doesn't matter until weigh off. The new people will find alot of growers become hermits when they have a good pumpkin on the vine.

concerning a measuring device--howzabout:
two yardsticks going vertically. for the height measurement.

across the top is a third for the width measurement--- it would be like a big 'H', with everybody able to slide to infinitely-variable dimensions---maybe a bit too much without development and testing.....just my million-dollar idea for the day. okay, month. 'pal
