One plant has started a third vine and I only want two, one in each direction. Is it ok to cut off the third? Should I run the third vine parallel to one of the two keepers and then remove the inferior one?

maybe you wanna create 2 Christmas trees, back to back from the same main stump. cool! i would eliminate the third. perhaps if you run them side by side to see what'll happen, they may stay the same size as each other and then you'll still be in the same boat! i see no advantage in keeping the third vine, unless you want to have a tri-way plant... hmmm...ohhh, i'd better not go there.....

OOPS....going side by side there will be little sunlight gained. To much leaf overlap or need for trimming. Food for thought.

If you only want 2, then yes cut the third off. Throw a shovel full of soil over the wound.
