LOL.... I have you all beat.(<: A few years ago hubby had a backhoe in to dig a hole for a clothes line pole. Three feet down or so, they struck ledge. We removed rock and pieces of ledge from the dirt pile and then put the soil back in the hole (we ended up using a tree for a clothesline pole instead) The hole needed more soil so we used horse manure. Last spring I filled the hole with more manure and put in an atlantic giant seedling that I had started from seed out of a 190 pound pumpkin that I had raised from Veseys A.G. seed the year before. The hole measured no more than 3 feet across....9 sq. feet in all. The plant produced a 140 pound pumpkin. (Big for this immediate area...took third in a local contest) The plant was free to roam over grass growing field....but had only the few sq feet of actual soil.

Last year I got a 252 lbs. and a 146 lbs. pumpkin from the same plant in my 75 sq. ft. patch. This year I am shooting for one over 500 lbs.

all right, i'm gonna grow one straight up a fence, coming out of a 1-gallon pot! lol
Hey, Desert--i think that if the hole was a circular hole, you might have actually had LESS than 9 square feet total!
now, what was that equation i used to know...A=IR/V ?? lol
