I was wondering the same thing. I'm growing the 1186.4 Whittier 02 and the plant is growing slower than the other plants I'm growing. The leaves are all cupped upwards and are firm. I don't think these leaves will have the ability to undergo photosynthesis as well.
I'm curious if this is a disease or a genetic development.I also thought that I may have overheated the plant with my space heater in the hoop house that I'm growing it in.

My friend, John, took a picture of it tonight and posted in his grower's diary under "Beet" from cheyenne wy.

Let me know what your thoughts are,

Appears to be a genetic defect. If it were me....I'd put in the "back-up" plant.

Those are young, new leaves. Give 'em a week and I'll bet they'll grow out and unfurl.

I don't like the general overall looks of it. I like Stan's opinion.

Some of mine did something similar this year. I think it might have been too much light? The got yellow just at the edges, and were crinkled like a drawstring was pulled throught their perimeter, but they are straightened out and flat now.

Yikes!

I don't like the look of that either.
Looks like a mutant - the stems of the leaves appear to be much longer than normal. (compared to the canopy of the leaf.)

I would pull this and back it up too.

thank you all for responding. I think it makes sense to plant one of the back-up plants I have in the greenhouse, I'll do that tomorrow. I think I'll leave the Whittier in the ground for awhile to see what it looks like over time, and pull it if it if the back-up plant begins to outgrow it.

I'm curious to hear if Shazzy has similar morphology.

Shazzy; ..check out my diary. i have 1 plant that looks like yours. i also have 9 others that have similar looking leaves. most just have 2 or 3 leaves that are similar to yours. i`ve been experimenting with these 10 plants to see the effects of different problems that i intentionally caused. i made my plant look like that through an experiment i performed on it. i think. i won`t know for sure for another week or two. i`ll post my results here when i`m done. maybe then i`ll know how to fix it too.

Keep that plant if you do backups, I'd like to see what happens after a week or so.
