Culling is tough, anyone agree? I have two plants together, both look very good, different seeds. I have heard that choosing a plant to keep and one to cull when they have 4 true leaves or so really doesn't matter how they look. Some great plants that produce big pumpkins don't always look super pretty and some super pretty ones can produce small pumpkins. True or false? Seems it's just a game of chance on which to choose if they are close and both healthy. Any thoughts? Jim

Jim, don't go strictly on looks as your right that some great pumpkins started on plants that grew slow early on & later kicked in. A lot of factors play in, past record of seed, the genetics of the seed, as well as the health of the plant. But if you do judge by the looks I personally would pay more attention to the thickness of the base of the plant as they tend to produce bigger stumps, thus bigger main vines...
just my thought on it......Paul

Thanks...I have 10 plants and am only planning on keeping 3 or 4. Thicker stems...sounds like a plan to me!
