My 2001 crop was grown in plain old field dirt...no manure had ever been applied in the field...not until 2002. That years crop was 868, 865.5, 845, and 695. It can be done, but it's much more difficult keeping the soil loose. Alan

manure is OM, but OM in not always manure.

well, not to have the thread diverted, maybe all that CRAP is over rated. considering that to some of us it is an expense, then the time to apply, the net gain may not justify it.

Alan is right, soil must be kept loose all the time. My 2002 patch with the 417 was not even tilled and hard as a highway. This year I brought leaves (shreddered), 2 tons of manure and tilled 3 times. Big difference. Compost is not as loose as manure and can compact when drying in the sun.

I believe the "secret" is to have a high level of OM such as cover crops, compost ect. Manure is great, but it really has minimal NPK benefits compared to chemical fertilizer. As long as the root system can expand freely through the soil and it is kept moist at the cation exchange level you will have good results, to get great results the humus and pH level need to be perfected...
