Does anyone know about Saltmarsh Hay? I feel that I am being mislead by a farmer who is insisting on this is salt marsh hay. I have only seen saltmarsh hay that is course and totally seedless. This hay is soft and looks like regular hay. It doesn't have the smell that salt marsh hay has.... Is there someplace where I can get this hay tested to see if it is or isn't salt marsh hay....
I live in Massachusetts....Thanks

Snappy,
Go to the beech & look at the stuff. It either is or it isn't. We used to harvest our own until the "Piping Plover Lovers" put an end to it.
Since Salt Marsh hay commands a premium price, there is no shortage of shysters ready to sell the stalks from any number of cereal crops after the good stuff is harvested off the top of the stalks. But if you find either now then it would be last years crop. So it might very well smell funny depending on how it was stored. If it's gray then it probably got wet & is moldy.

Thank you for the reply... I have used salt marsh hay for years and I just know that it isn't salt marsh hay... Thanks a million

Snappy last time i bought salt marsh hay was a couple of years back at the Agway store in South Chelmsford, but they don't always have it in stock.

I got piles of it outside my house. And it's free. Take a ride over to Ipswich and I will head you in the direction where you can fill up.
