Have a look at the 2003 diary of Ben Bortner. There is an entry on March 30 with picture of a simple, portable hothouse.

How big? I'm building a 14' x 12' unit from scratch using metal galvanized fence post & commercial galvanized conduit.
Should figure out how to post pics of it any day now.

Mine is 5 x 8, they were a little time consuming to build but not expensive. They should last for a very long time. You can email me if you want some instructions, ideas, or whatever. [email protected]

I use 1/2" pvc pipe, 1/2" rebar and some aligator paper clips from Staples or any other office supply store.
They take about 20 minutes to make or take down and cost about $12 for a 6X8 frame. All you need is plastic. I spent a little more last year and bought greenhouse plantic from Gothic greenhouses, but the plastic will last for 4 years of continous use so i figure it will last about 48 years since I only uses it for a month or so. Looking at it that way I spent $2 a year on plastic.
if you have any Questions drop me an e-mail and I will get some details out to you,
John

Follow Pumpkinheads directions, and use some wire ties to run one pvc pipe down the middle for stability. Then you can use the pvc pipes later to shade your pumpkin.

I used 2 X 2's...2 X 4s ripped. Built a simple square box 4' X 4'. The ends can be opened for venting or adding a light bulb for heat. Later in the year the same frame can support an inexpensive tarp to cover and shade the next world championship pumpkin. Thinking big! :)

So far mine has only cost $120. But the cover was free. Probably about $250 when it's done without the electricals & mechanicals.

Tazman Dennis was kind enough to build me a couple awesome small ones. 6'W x 8'L x 40"H, Pressure treated 2x4's. Stainless screws on all joints, polyurethane adhesive on the permanent end triangle joints. Six boards in total. The three 8' long boards are not glued to faciliate unassembled storage if needed. Covered in 6 mil plastic.

One is just slightly smaller than the other so they can be stacked on top of each other when not being used.

Perhaps Dennis will see this & chime in on his very thoughtful design.

Hey if I can get one exceeding 4 X 4 while still in the cold frame I will gladly rebuild to correct a judgement error. :) Later in the year I may have to open up the four sides from a 90 degree box to a pentagon with the bottom being the earth. I will place a four foot square mirror at each open end of the pentagon box. That way the critter will not stop growing because of the mind blowing desire to be the largest of three in the patch. I may add a soft white light to keep the image visable in the mirrows even at night. Don't ever let the boogers sleep!

These are growers helps you don't always find in books. :)
