Everyone is welcome to join one or both of the first annual BigPumpkins.com 2003 growing contests! We are featuring a Pumpkin and a Squash contest with exciting prizes to the top seven finalists in each contest. The pumpkin Contest requires all contestants to grow an 840 Desrosiers (805 Pukos x Self)seed. It was chosen as the official contest seed by BigPumpkins.com members because of its expected potential to grow large pumpkins and as a tribute to Ken Desrosiers who is the father of BigPumpkins.com. If you do NOT have an 840 seed and would like to join the contest, please e-mail me (Mike Frantz) at [email protected]. The Squash contest was created to encourage growers to grow and to promote the growing of giant Squash. Growers are not limited to a specific seed in the Squash contest as in the Pumpkin contest. The trick is that to be eligible for prizes your Squash must be a "True" 100% green or blue specimen and you must declare ahead of time what seed(s) you are growing in the contest. For complete details on either contest please review the link posted under "Odds and Ends" found on the BigPumpkins.com home page or contact me for help. It is my hope that many growers will choose to participate in one or both of these contests and help to make these contests something to be remembered and hopefully a very successful and exciting annual event. Just wanted to let everyone know that at the present moment we have 15 registered participants in the 840 pumpkin contest and 14 in the squash contest. With 7 prizes in each contest look at the odds of winning one of these awesome prize packages! Come on all you procrastinators and get your entry forms in. Just a reminder that an 845 Bobier is up for grabs in the 840 pumpkin contest and it could be yours to place in your patch next year!!! Remember that entry forms are due in on or before May 1st. Good luck to everyone and I hope to see a few more entry forms soon! Mike Frantz

I think that this contest encourages new people to enjoy growing giant pumpkins and giant squash. It is fantastic for us newbies. It is a great learning experience for first year people.

The experienced giant pumpkin growers are probably using other seeds on their limited growing areas to grow for a world champion giant.

Or they may have other seeds that they have already planned on growing.

I am very excited about the contest and plan on enjoying every minute of growing and learning how to grow the big ones.

I want to thank you for the oportunity and the pleasure of participating.

Diane

I think a first year grower's division would be cool so newbies like me could compete with others at the same level as them and not feel completely overwhelmed because all the veterans would whoop their butts in the contest. Just an idea. Brigitte

Brigitte, a year ago I was where you are right now, studying up on BP.com all winter and looking forward to my first year growing AG's. I ended up growing a 762 est. a 673 uow. and two 590.5's. I didn't think I'd do so well, but it goes to show that in your first year, you can grow some big pumpkins. The people here know big pumpkins and how to grow them. Ask them if you don't know something, you'll always get some good answers. I think you may be suprised at your pumpkins this fall, you may whoop some veterans buts. Good luck.
