interesting approach to identification. Wouldn't be a bad idea to have scans of proven seeds available on this site for comparison.

All the ones I've seen were more round than narrow and white!

Pictures would create more fakes....if your that concerned you probably shouldnt have traded....only trade with people you trust and ask where its been !!......G

801.5 are not white, they are tan/brown! many of them have a very very light band of orangeish red around the edge of the seed. It makes the seed look a little darker overall. Every 801 I have seen has been slightly fatter and plumper than the average seed. As far as their size they are average. For the record, I have grown it twice and seen at least 6 authentic seeds.

could there have been white and brown seeds? My 537 had a few white seeds in her.

Big John:

I had an 801.5 this year and it was as kilrpumpkins described "more round than narrow and white" hope this helps.

Also for every one else, wouldn't it be a good idea for growers to intial and date their seed or mark it some how.

I've traded alot of seed this year and seen quite a few growers doing this, seems like a good idea. I will be doing this to my seed this fall as it's hard to trade seed if a grower says gives you 10 seeds and you trade 2 and have to put it in different envelopes, some people want the trade seed in origanal envelope.

Plus I had a mishap with about five packs of seed this year one of which was the 790 Daletas I was working a trade with Carrie for had to scrap the deal cause I couldn't tell which seed was what, plus it had baby slobber all over it. Would have been nice if the seed was marked...

yeah, we should think up a way to identify the seeds as authentic...but G is right i think, anyone could look at a picture and use ones that look like the picture to counterfeit with. and, anyone can write 801.5 or 845 or...
if you've seen Minority Report, you were amazed by the ball of wood for it HAD to be unique..neat-o! a fingerprint of sorts, that's what we need--and don't trade if you're not 100% sure...give it time. hey, i just wish i had SEEN an 801.5 seed! lol pal

I grew an 801.5 in 2000 and it is a fat little brown seed . If you traded for an 801.5 Stelts that is white it is not an 801.5 I am sure of that .

Perhaps it's time for a standardized method of packaging that could include a simple type of serial number. Opening the package should destroy the serial number.
Not that a crook couldn't duplicate the package & serial number. But the grower could at least log where the seeds went to. And "good locks" do tend to keep honest people honest.
Hey. Valuable seeds could even be protected with a dye pack like the money bags at the bank. If the dye were a vegetable based compound, it wouldn't harm the seed.

Boy. We really need spring to get here don't we? LOL
