Just for fun I checked to see how many 1000 pound plus fruit were grown off of unproven seed and was surprized to see 13 were grown on unproven seed in 2002.

WOW! I wonder how much time it took to learn that? If 13 were from "unproven seed", how many were from "proven seed"?

Someone here said there were 40 over a thousand pounds grown in America last year. If that is correct nearly a third were from so called unproven seed. It would be my thought that those thirteen and a significant number of the ballance were grown in greatly improved patch conditions as well as improved grower management.
This hobby is to young to draw any data facts to conclusion at this hour. It is nice that more and more are being grown and better records are being encouraged by this site.
It is further encouraging that many of the early growers are still growing and coaching the newbees along.

soooo, let's all of us mix it up and plant at least one unproven seed along with the other 4 or 5 monster-makers in the same growing area and give that one the best of care also! ANY seed grown in the best of conditions will most likely reach its maximum potential...though some seeds may do a little better or worse in different climatic regions, or so i've heard....and it is highly dependent on the grower's ability and time spent on that plant as well. like an alligator--it can live on land and do all right, and you might be able to outrun it....but in the water, in its element--there's no stopping it! dum analogy? yup! lol the seed would be the 'gator... but i hope my comment is in tune with those that have the room for numerous plants, and can devote one spot to a "seed of a lesser God" and give it the Royal treatment...
by the way, i've got some unproven Gerry seeds that need placement in a patch where a committed and knowledgeable grower can give them....... 'pal

Thanks Alun I was trying to help new growers with this message and it seems most people appreciate it. All but one I see.

2 of my 3 will be unproven. My neighbor has been working on a small area and is going to plant one this year also. It will also be an unproven seed.
