I was testing my seeds from my pumpkin from last year, put five inbetween 2 wet paper towls and in a zip lock baggy. No advanced seed method, I left the shell on the seeds. After 2 and a half days, one germinated, 4 others began growing white fuzzy mold and some black mold on them with no germination. Seeds still were fine, no rotting. Never had this happen before, my third year. Is this mean my seeds are bad or can mold get on them another way from the paper towels? The seeds were dried very well in the fall. Is it a good idea to try more and see what the results are? Thanks, Jim

Sounds like a fungicide might help. There are powderd ones you can just dip the seed into prior to placing it between the damp towl. I have been trying one that also has a root hormone, (maybe I should say that the root hormone also has a fungicide). It seems to work well.

Yes, my seeds were on top of our vcr, it works great and is a nice warm temp, not too hot, just right. I didn't file the seeds because I'm just testing them. can mold come from something besides the seeds? Jim

Jim,

See some of the growers diaries for Peroxide treatments.
Boily I know did it & there are probably others.
Any chance the seeds were too wet. How about the temps?

regular-strength Captan, fungicide...in the water you use to initially create your starter seed mix with...wear doctors' rubber gloves and eye protection!

peat pot, filled with the mix, NOT TOO WET! if it's dark, it's wet enough....put Saran wrap over top of it to keep it from drying out.....

keep whole thing at 90 Degrees F. constantly...yes, 90!

you will have a nice little sprout in 72 hours....usually.

it should be a given to use fungicide in your start-water, especially when starting-up your 845, 801.5, 935...!
good luck 'pal

Let them 10 hours in 3% usual commercial hidrogen peroxide, after filing the edges and then to the pots like Pumpkinpal said, no paper towel needed either recommended.
Best of luck
