6 lobed flower on a pumpkin? I personally have never had a plant come into my knowledge that is has 6 lobes. I don't know if it is regular to see them, that it why I ask.

I was reading a website, and someone said on there. "This morning I pollunated a *6 lobe flower"

I saw two on the same plant at the same time last summer. Since I am new I gave it little thought. Thinking about it now I think I like the math probability for wall strength in a five over a six. The lines that can split are in the center of an opposing segement on the other side when odd numbers are considered. Even numbers are straight accross the fruit when even numbers are considered. There is weakness in an indent and strength in the gently curving side of the segment. Open for opinion and discussion!

I grew 2 fruit on the 762 Neuville that were 7 lobers. All other fruit were 4 or 5 lobers. The 7 lobers had lots of seeds......1045 and 820.

I think 4 & 5 lobe flowers have been the most common in my patch, however I too have seen a few 6 & 7 lobed flowers. Although I keep trck of how many lobes a flower has, I don't use it in decision-making when its time to cull. "How to Grow Giant Pumpkins" suggested that larger pumpkins should come from more lobes, yet if you look at the 1000-pounders grown, many had only 4 lobes. I had never thought about the strength aspect, as docgipe mentioned....might be something to consider. --Bryan

If you'd like to see a picture of a 7 lobed flower just go up to the "site search" on BP and type in "7 lober" it's not the best picture but you can still make all 7 of them out.

docgipe is a trouble maker! He will ask all kinds of questions and maybe do things a little differently just tweak or try to tweak up the strengts of the common practices and beliefs of growing these monsters. Often the sucker will ask questions just to stirr up thought from others.

...the doc will see his first AG in the garden this summer.
It's one of the most interesting things ever done in a lifetime of gardening. I'm not sure but I don't think that Big Moon I grew last summer was an AG????
