I'm in san diego and can only grow one plant. My plant will be the 1230 daletas, 845 nesbitt if the 1230 seed fails me. I want to get a great cross for polinating. I have two questions. Can I grow another plant indoors or out and cross with it even if the plant is extremely small or stunted? (No room or time to grow it good). Would that pass on bad genes if the plant wasn't normal? Second, is it possible to get male flowers from other growers not close to me? Not to many growers with great seeds in san diego. I would love to cross with the 845 Bobier or something else really good. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Jim

Jim, you could grow a second plant for a pollinator only, you wouldn't need to keep it any longer than just to get the male flowers. Once you pollinated enough females on the plant you want you can forget about the other one or pull it out.

Jim - are you sure you want to cross the 1230?
I mean is this really important to you?

If you have room for only one plant just self it.

Don't put the 845 Nesbitt in a pot. In my opinion, that would be a total waste of a proven seed.

Yes, I agree with CEIS, sometimtes it only helps to keep them "within the family". I have personal experiences with many plants where sometimes cross breeding mixes in a certain part of family you really do not need.

Not normally will you get something way out of whack, but there is that slim chance.

You say you can only grow one plant, then rest assure you do not want to tkae the chance in making a big mistake by possibly crossing in a hereditary deformity (that may have not taken place in the last few generations) and really ruining it. (I.E. I am not an expert on this nor do I know if such information is valid at this point in time, has anyone noticed that pumpkin core thickness goes down the family line? I have had one or two pumpkins stear off course, but most of them when it's time to cut open are very alike the pumpkin that I breeded it from.)

by the weigh, how much room do you actually have??
length X width, that sort of thing....
Otherwise, i'm sure there'll be a lot of people interested
in some of your 1230 X 1230 seeds!----by the weigh,
i will be growing the 845 BOBIER '00 and the 1230 Daletas,
so be sure to look me up around September 30th...!

thanks for the info. My patch is around 600 sq ft, but the plant will only be in 100 sq ft of dirt. The rest is lawn grass. My patch is actually our front yard. Gets lots of people to stop and ask questions. So far it's been great.

Just make sure that grass doesn't touch the pumpkin, sometimes they will leach on to a pumpkin root sucking up all the water (Just as any old weed would do). Also sometimes the pumpkin may do this in vise versa to the grass.

Jim,
Last year I grew a pollinator plant in a 10 gallon pot and had about 100 male flowers. Another was grown in a 1 gallon container and it flopped (no flowers), guess there just wasn't enough space for the roots.
I live less then 100 miles from you, maybe we could trade some male flowers?

Wes
PS. The lawn will have to GO.
