Just to let you know that Black Walnut leaves carry a Toxin called " Jugoline" You should not use Black Walnut leaves in your Patch or your Garden.

You should avoid using leaves from all members of the Juglandaceae. This includes Black Walnut, English Walnut, Butternut, pecans and all of the Hickories. They all contain varying levels of juglone, juglandin and juglandic acid which are naturally occuring toxins that can dramatically inhibit plant growth. This is a mechanism the plans use to fend off competition.

Interesting side note: Several species of squash have been observed to be resistant to and/or tolerant of these toxins.

The roots of Juglans sp excrete toxins too. Don't plant anything too close to one. At one time, folks would toss the bruised husks of the nuts into the nesting areas of spawning fish, then net dinner. This little stunt will nab you some hefty fines today.
For anyone contemplating removing a Black Walnut to make way for pumpkins; cut the straight logs into the longest lengths possible. Preferably 10' straight sections. Then contact a few cabinet makers & let the bidding begin.

Before you count your money one likely should let the logger come in, determine if he wants the log and make the offer to remove it. In this community they won't touch a property line tree and none that they can not prove metal free. Trees that were not managed are seldom premium logs so be aware that condition and quality do not grow on every stump. It sure is nice when a premium one does show up.
