I just happen to be the proud owner of a catapult and the best we have got a pumpkin to fly is about 70 meters

This could be interesting. Who sponsors the event, where and how to contact for entry and rules?

Wouldn't a catapult make an interesting addition to an otherwise predictable ag-fair? Probably make the news even without a record breaking weigh-in. Sell chances to predict the distance & raffle off a TV or something. Seeds too of course. I'll watch just to see if I can build one. The last catapult manufacturer around here closed up shop when we got soft & did away with the guillotine. Hmmmmm.....Pumpkin vs Squash Chess....Pumpkin Jousting......Sword Carving....a medieval pumpkin festival? We know there's no connection, but TV & newspaper folks wouldn't care. Might rustle up some new revenue for a financially strapped weigh-in site. Good marketing stunts needn't make sense nor cost a lot. Just gotta be a little corney & perhaps even borderline crazy. The paying publc is a strange animal indeed & all weigh-ins & fairs need their money.

In Sept, 2002 when I brought my Cover-crop Rye seed the Sales person (who knew I grow pumpkins) offered to show me the Cannon the Company was building to enter a Catapult contest near there (North Java, NY). At that point they had tried shooting 1 gallon jugs of water and said they went over one half mile. They were still making modifications to make it easy to insert the pumpkins at the beginning of the barrel. The driving force is from a large tank of Comprerssed air.

G, You might strive for North to South shorese this year?!? So this stuff is more common than I thought huh? Probably because of our population density, Connecticut Ag Fairs don't enjoy such exhilarating activities (that I've seen anyway). Past few years, it seems more folks go to the midway than the tractor pulls. Darn it. Ken & John would probably agree with me here, suburban living isn't all it's cracked up to be.

We figure to launch from Eatons Neck or Port Jefferson Harbor area and stratigically pick off large pumpkins in late September...got some target sites lined up in Wallingford, Durham, and Fairfield areas I think we can hit from here.....

G,…. obviously you have forgotten that CT has more defense industries than you can throw a squash at. There have long been ‘government jobs’ at work behind the scenes in these defense industries to ensure the safety of all CT giant pumpkins from any and all airborne hostility.

You go Bart! Watch it G. I live next to Sikorsky Helicopter. Got friends there too. CT growers may be tempted to Sky-Crane a Monster & "deliver" it to that sandbar you call home. LOL
