In just a year and a half, our sport will see a radical change in the acquisition of seed. Some say "for the worse" ....others "for the betterment"....time will tell.
At the recent internet auction, it was made very clear that
some growers will pay "good money" to improve their chances at growing a 1000 pounder. It may come to the point that some growers, especially those retired, will be "forced" to sell their seed if they are to continue growing. It does cost substantial amounts of money to grow a 1000 pounder.
Now is the time for the GPC or other growing organizations to begin to work on the impending challenge facing our "hobby". I believe that a compromise can be found to keep most growers happy. However, now is the time to begin dialog on this subject!

Someone reported that the protection held by the Dill interest comes off in 2004. My opinion is to let the market find itself in its own time. The reward should go to the ones who earn it. This is hearsay with possilble error in content.

As it is right now even if someone wanted to he or she could not get into genetic engineering of a protected seed or plant there of.

In the case of protected medicines the price comes down when the market is free to produce without restriction.

I think that there will always be seeds available for the average guy sending a bubble mailer. If i ever grow a REALLY big one, you can count on me to give out free seeds, i'll tell you that much. Im confident that many others will as well. Will most do this? im not sure, i guess we'll have to wait and see, unless someone comes up with a good plan.

Now, i have a question, when the pvp expires, will it still apply to seeds grown BEFORE it expired? Meaning, if you grew a seed in 2004, you would be able to sell those, BUT, if you had a seed that was grown in 2001 you wouldnt be able to sell it?

I would like to reply to this on a couple of notes.
1st I should apologize to Stan for the post I made before his auction. It was in no way directed towards his auction but one might get that idea. I was upset with the great number of people I saw in the chat room, 2/3's of them I've never seen post a answer to anyone's question. In my mind they were only using the site as a personal gain. The site is not about that, I'm sure there are 100's or even 1000's of people logged onto this site. So why do I only see a few folks answer questions. If you are going to use the site to advance your seed collection then also help out the growers who need your help. I hope that clears things up a bit.
2nd, June 2004---I've always thought that once you throw money into the mix you get greed, anger & bad blood. I think nothing good can come from Mr. Dill losing control of the patent. My hope is he can keep it,so that the joy of seed trading will not go by the wayside

I was thinking about this more and i think it will be up to each individual grower to stick with his morals and what he knows that right thing to do. Everyone should make it their personal goal not to sell seeds.

Good question scott about the seeds grown before 94.

How about this one. When June of 2004 rolls along,Howard Dill will lose his rights But,if you have seeds even in 2005 or 2008 that you want to sell. What about the Genetics that are in the seeds that Howard Dill owns before June of 2004? I personaly beleive man will ruin all of this on his own. People in life now days are basically money hunger. So many people will do anything to make a buck. If you take a grower who wants $10.00 per seed, sooner or later people will get tired of ones who want money for there seeds and will go to people who offer them free such as I do. I will aways be willing to send out seeds for free even if i grew a 1,300lb pumpkin

The way I see it is that some will start to sell their seed some people will pay for them. Some people will get shafted. Most will search for free seed. I think that the more people get shafted by immoral people trying to make a buck the less likely people will be to buy seeds from anyone but friends and proven honest growers. It is too easy to lie about what a seed is supposed to be, and too hard to tell if what you paid for is what you really got. Of course friends will most likely continue much like they have been trading and giving seed away. I think that it will be hard for most growers to get very much for even "hot" seed unless a way is found to "prove it is what you say it is"! Would you pay $185 for a 940 mombert-98 from just anyone who said they had one? It went for that in the auction. The only reason any of the seed went so high is bidders knew they would really get what they paid for and it was for a good cause and the seeds were top notch hot seeds. I may be stupid for saying this but I doubt even the growers themselves would sell many (if any) seed at the prices they went for at auction. Could Kirk get 10 or 20 bucks each for his 940-98's? I think so. But wouldn't the only seed to sell very well be proven hot seed like the 940? There is only one way I know of for a seed to become proven and hot and we all know what that is. So what happens? I think that intially you would have to give or sell real cheap to get your seeds grown by enough people to have any hope of your seed becoming hot. If you grow a record pumpkin you could probly get 10 bucks each right off the bat. But how often do those things happen? Hot seeds and records are rare in terms of how many are grown each year. Most seed will probly be free. After all once a seed becomes hot you have to "pay" alot of good seed to get it even now. If the hottest seed costs then it costs and I will be forced to grow what i can get or afford.
