Ok I always saw everyone doing this but I never knew why? Why do you guys cover up your pumpkins? IS the sunlight bad for them???

The sunlight hardens the skin thus preventing it from stretching (for the lack of a better word) as the pumpkin grows. Thus either limiting the size of the pumpkin or increasing the risk of splits. The other thing the tarp does is limit the water that gets on and under the pumpkin thus keeping it drier with hopefully less chance of rot. Now as for the different colors of the tarps I don't think it makes one bit of difference what the color is.

Hey...don't forget to leave ventilation if using a tarp. It can get hot in the cover house. Wanna go cheapie? Look at the diaries and use of plastic piping as a support. Seems to me most growers are using cheapie K-Mart tarps.
I'd love to know where the orange one's came from. Dream big! Build it to hold a 1000+.
He Blocky...Newvill is in my favorite fishing area for trout. My childhood home was Greencastle.

Wal-Mart sells the orange ones, that's where I got mine. In the automobile accessory section.

Thanks Southern.....I would never have found them in that department. I don't do car stuff. I think those orange tarps are the berries for a pumpkin patch. It is a pattern for the fruit color. :)
