As many of you know, there is going to be a pumpkin contest in the 03' season. Participants will be growing an 840 Desrosiers and competiting for braging rights and a portion of a very nice prize package. Currently 20-30+ people plan to participate in the contest. It was suggested that since I am in charge of the pumpkin contest that I attempt to run a Squash contest parallel to the pumpkin contest. What a great idea! So, I would like to know who would be interested in competiting in the "2003 BigPumpkins.com Squash competition"? I will once again try to arrange a prize package (donations are WELCOME)! The rules are not set in stone yet, but contenders will be allowed to choose which seed they would like to grow and only "true" squash (100% green)will be considered for prizes. So if you are interested please post here or if you have any question, comments, suggestions or anything (on the pumpkin or squash contests)feel free to post here or e-mail me or my assistants steveman(pumpkin contest) or ClintonRose (squash contest). Amount of participation will determin if we will attempt a squash contest or not. Thanks, Mike Frantz [email protected]

I would go for the squash. There are a lot already wanting to grow the 840 pumpkin. Questions: 1) If somebody grows a squash that is bigger than any of the pumpkins, would they become the BP Grand Champion. 2) What seed

I say the squash competition should be open seed competition....squash interest is low enough. Maybe have everyone post if they are in on the competition by a certain day....say May 1 or so.

Yes Tom is right....that is what I meant to say but after re-reading it it is confusing. Everyone can use which ever seed they want. There will be no vote on a specific seed, its your personal choice what you wantto grow. Only catch is you better do your research and pick a seed that WILL throw green. I plan to grow in this contest also but know little about Squash seeds as Im sure many others here. Could some of our "Squash Experts" maybe list off a few seeds that should or will go 100% green to help everyone see what is out there?

Off the top of my head here are a few that will throw green & would be fairly easy to get. Hester 895, Smith 703, Welty 744, Andrews 220, Koch 524, My 349, Larue 516, Stellpflug 771........there are many others but I would bet any of these would throw green easy.

I like the idea of a TRUE squash contest. I would only participate if the rule is that the fruit must be 100% Green, grey or blue-grey. Most of the Squash entries at recent GPC weigh-offs are pumpkins that were not 75% pumpkin colors( my 818 (02) included). I have lots of seeds from my 771(01) and 726(02). Most of the fruit will be a bluish grey. The seeds are TAN as the 771 was from Hester's 895, which has a pumpkin background. The 726 is from the 771 and was selfed. Send a stamped self addressed bubble pack to Len Stellpflug, 1925 Middle Road, Rush NY, 14543 if you want some of these seeds.

Len, no squash contest would be complete without you. Here I was already to just go orange this year & now I HAVE to grow green ( and orange) this coming season. And as long as you could grow any seed you wanted I think you will be surprised Mike at how many would give it a try. Lets see you would have Len,Alan & Alun,Nic,Tom,Casey,Glen,myself,Bob,Clarance,Mark,Wayne,David,Andy,Bill,Ben,Brett.....ya getting the point. There are a BUNCH of us who enjoy growing green as well as orange. To add a extra challenge, there has never been a "true" squash grown over 1000 lbs yet. The closest in my mind being Ben Hebbs 990 lber ( some might disagree). I hope someone on the sight is the first to grow 1000 lbs & ALL green...........Paul

I'll go folks, you'll see a strange green monster coming direct from Spain. But I would ask for a really deep green squash contest, not grey squampkins, how do you see it? And we should fix a weighoff date, shouldn't we. What about the last sunday of September? I already have some candidates to plant: 856 Hester, 726 Stellpflug, 349 Huffer, Smith 703 and expecting some ones more!

Yea, I personally think that's a hot seed you got there Jim, same cross as the Needham. I've got less space than I do crosses for 2003 but the 552 is getting planted by me at some point.
