WAIT TIL NEXT YEAR

So. Maine

Just a friendly reminder to growers who are trading or sending seeds to other growers, please take a few seconds to check if they are hollow or not by dropping the seed on a table or counter and listen to the sound when it hits.A good seed will sound solid when it hits while a hollow or half hollow seed will sound kinda empty.Matt M. mentioned this same problem on this board about 2 years ago. I reciently spoke to Jim Kuhn about this and he mentioned he also is still receiving hollow seeds from growers, some who are very well known in the world of giant pumpkins. I have received hollow seeds in the past but so far this season all seeds I have received in trades have been full.Just thought I would pass this along before we get into the full swing of trading in the next few months. Thanks, Al Berard

If you are calling an immature, flat seed a "hollow" seed, than I agree it will probably not germinate. I have had seeds that felt and sounded "hollow" that did indeed, germinate. If growers discard any of their seeds that sound hollow, (when they indeed may be viable),than the total amount of seeds (and recipients), decreases. I've seen some pretty pathetic looking seeds grow some mighty big pumpkins! If it grows a 1000#er, there'll be many a grower planting those hollow seeds the following year!

My personal best came from seeds that I thought would never germinate. I'm glad I tried them. So if you have any hollow sounding 846s,723s,845s,935s or others. Please feel free to send them to me!LOL You're probably right though. You should not trade a big tome hollow seed to someone for a big time seed. It will have a lower germination rate. I had to plant 6 of the seeds I was talking about to ge 2 to germinate. 30% germ. is not good!
