Hey Booth, researching the Internet, I've found in http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/htmlfiles/ca/ca.max.html that your average maximum July temp is 98.2 F. Have you used, or are you thinking in using a thin shade cloth over the entire patch? My A.M.T. for July is 92.3 and I am thinking to prepare a estructure to support a 30% shade cloth 10-12 ft high, and I want to be capable to open and close it as the day come.

I guess it depends on what you want, World Class seeds from certian clubs, or access to World Class weigh off sites. I live in the Pacific NorthWest so thankfully they are one and the same here. I join both the Pacific NorthWest Giant Pumpkin Growers, and the Pacific Giant Vegitable Growers. Both sites have Superstar growers as members, and freely distribute world class seed to it's members. Oh and now is membership renewal time! "This has been an unsolicited endorsement for giant pumpkin clubs everywhere"

Don Q. ; thats about right for July 92-106 is the range of temps . the last 2 weeks of June and the first three weeks in August included. it`s usually a fairly dry heat until end of Aug when humidity starts to appear. Yes i use shades on the patch. but i don`t buy the factory products. instead i made my own from a plastic material. i can`t recall the common name of it but i`m sure you have seen it. it`s the stuff they use around construction sites to keep people out. orange, 4 feet tall with square holes. you can get it with 2",11/2" 1" and i think even 1/2" holes. it comes in rolls of 500` and 100` length. it`s also available by the foot at home depot. i like the 11/2" because i can fold it over itself on really hot days to provide more shade and even slide the holes to any width over the lower piece to adjust to any size opening you want. it`s really stronr so you can stretch it as tight or loose as you want.it`s also a perfect thing to tie your misters and vinyl tubing onto. i just weave the 1/2" black vinyl supply hose through the holes then poke holes in it for misters anywhere i want them. i can adjust , with spaghetti hose for placing misters to any height i like. for supports at each end i use 3/4" pvc pipe made into a tee. cap each end, put a pipe thread to hose thread adapter where-ever i need and one on the bottom of one support to connect a water hose to and shazzam!! i have a complete misting system for about 20 bucks. sometimes i put a metal fence post next to the upright to tie the pvc to for strength. the orange construction material costs under 10 bucks for a 100` roll. only down side to it is it`s only 4` wide. but i just run as many strips of it as i need as tie them tegeather with bailing wire or whatever.it dropped the temp from 106 to 86 in 10 minutes. booth

Gads; my main reason is for learning. sharing info with others from the same geo and climate seems more accurate to my specific problems than with someone from an entirely different environment, wouldn`t you think? i mean if someone has a problem with...SVB and they don`t exist in my locale ,info about irradication or control would be meaningless to each of us. of course there is a wealth of info to be gleaned in other aspicts from ALL growers regardless of experience. that`s why i keep up with you here at BP.com. assns. near to me would also be more accessable to me in person. i could attend functions more often if meetings were within a day drive. it would give me more chances to prove just how little i REALLY know about growing the BIG ONE in person. seeds and info. booth

booth............Could you make Portland, Oregon? They have a weigh off and guys scattered all over that part of the West Coast. Know you are quite some distance South. This is a growing hobby. It would be a fair guess that in a couple of years Calif. may have weigh offs.

Booth there is a weigh off each year in Half Moon Bay. I was going to it but was up in Oregon and couldn,t get back in time for that one. I did go to Shoreline up in Washinton. That was great. There is alot of growers over on the coast by Ventura. a As this gets bigger here i think there will be more weigh offs closer to us. I do belong to both clubs Gads belongs to. I am renewing my membership again this year.

i`m curious now if there is an existing association in central california or even the state? is there a government employee somewhere whose only purpose is to record listings of various associations throughout America and the world that i should contact? aside from the cia and fbi? are assns. required by law to be registered with the govm`t? if the answer to all of the above questions is no ,then anyone in central California who is interested in forming a pumpkin growers association stand up and say ...AYE... hmmm maybe we should e-mail somebody or something? how about we infiltrate another association to find out how they got started. then we covertly form ours after the more successful ones.',',',',',',don`t mean to step on anyones toes here, just a little humor to spice up a cold winters day. i really would like to know if one exists specifically for the west, calif, southwest, everything west of the rockies and south of utah, this side of the mississippi river? everyone feel free to jump right in here! com`on!! being in a one man association kind of misses the point, don`cha think?

Don Q;...I`m sorry. sometimes i get caught up in myself. the answer to your question that i so rudely forgot is this;..the plastic shade i use probably under 3 lbs per 100'roll.it is so strong that i cannot tear it in two pieces no matter how hard i try. very similar to the plastic 6 pack cans have on top.it is very plyable in any temperature hot and cold.this makes it ideal to me because i set my shade 10' above the ground so i can easily walk or work under it.being that high, heat isn`t trapped down by the pumpkin as much and it allows for better ventilation. i have mine so it can be opened or closed to accomodate for the suns position or set for constant or partial protection. it`s also adjustable as to the degree of light i want to come thru. i like using PVC pipe for the end supports because it`s lite-weight, strong, and slick on the outside. i connect the plastic to the PVC pipe with plain old 14 guage electrical wire. just tie a piece around the pipe and thru a hole in the plastic. leave about one inch clearance between them. tie like this about every 8 " across each end and on the last tie piece, leave about 6' hanging down. use that as a handle to pull the shade open or closed.end supports are 1 1/2" PVC pipe with a 90 degree elbow on top of each side connecting the 2 sides together. it looks like an upside down letter U when finished. bury each side 3' into the dirt. finished. i use a mister system with my shade and it attaches to it with no hassle.
