For seeds that were traded 3 weeks ago?
Curious if there is a standard protocol when two parties have decided to trade seed. One set of seeds arrived 3 days after the deal. The other hasn't. Any thoughts?

Can you contact who you traded with? If you can..Send them a email and try to find out what's going on.

I did. Not the sort of reply that would instill confidence.

3 weeks is too long. I'm having trouble with someone now, they won't reply to e-mails.
Thinking about getting out the whoopin' stick.

one more thing if you send me or any other heavyhitter a bubblepack include a letter telling a little something about you and your pumpkins.i talked to tony ciliberto yesterday and he told me of atleast 1 heavyhitter who is taking the stamps off bubblepacks and throughing them(the bubblepack) away if there isn't a letter with it or a letter saying i want seeds not even asking but saying i want.i have a few like this these will be the last to be filled if i still have seeds.jerry

I seem to be having the same problem here, last year i traded till i couldent trade anymore(got sick of it)and id recive in a timely manner 2 to 3 weeks. This year things seem to be going in slow gear for some reason!Im not mentioning names and im "NOT" talking about any trades i made in the last three weeks nor anyone in Canada,i have tried e-mailing but no reply. When this happens you can paint your own conclusions,I figure, well i got out of it cheap i will never trade with the nonmentioned partys again nor will i give a good refurrel to anyone who asks about them.Hey chaulk it up to experance. Some people in this world try to get things for nothing where everyone else has to pay and thats not right,if you dont hear from them dont ever deal with them again!what comes around goes around.John

My daughter went to school at York University near Toronto. I found that when sending mail to Canada, it usually just went slow. Something about going over the border. If you haven't received anything quickly from Canada, it probably isn't the grower, just slow mail getting across the border.

Jerry,
I sent you a bubble pack, but as a new grower I had no idea I needed to put a letter in with it. I found no protocol on how send bubble packs.I would like to have some of your seeds, but if you run out before you get to me I will understand. And as for the grower taking stamps off and trashing the bubble packs in my book thats stealing.I know it's only a couple bucks in stamps and envelopes but I don't feel thats right. The least they could do is send it back with a note saying "Next yr let me no what you want". I did get some back from growers saying they didnt no what I wanted, but here are some seeds.

I wasn't referring to a seed request either. I am referring to a simple exchange in trade. The transaction did not involve anyone from Canada. US to US. Seeds for seeds.

The other party has contacted me. Says they'll be here by spring. I wonder if my mortgage holder would swallow a line like that. LOL.

If this did involve my having begged for someone's seed, I'd never have the nerve to rush them. But this isn't a request for seed. It is good, old fasioned bartering. Goods for goods. Or so I thought.

It probably doesn't matter, but it is a little odd.

For those growers who offered free seed to me (you know who you are), Thank You. Those seeds got here very quickly. Mostly within 7-10 days. I find that amazing. So I did one single trade to increase the genetic diversity of what I'll plant next year. Given the example set by the tenured growers & hitters, I sent my half of the trade on the very day I said I would by priority mail ($3.85 to anywhere). It just seemed like the proper thing to do. Especially after the example set by the hitters. Oh, and the 3 growers who offered me & then sent seed all had some chance to figure out who I was & what my intentions are. We did converse either by phone or email. I guess a letter would provide the same confidence in them. But I can certainly see Jerry's point. I doubt I'd go out of my way to stuff seeds & send them into the world blindly. Those people who take the best care are those most likely to make the grower & his seed progeny look good.

Yes, we live we learn.

This was my first year for sending out seeds and I sent out a lot so far. It gets kinda boring after a while and a fella needs a break. Well during break time I may have forgotten someone and I apologize. I sent bp.com a hundred packets so you can get them there the end of this month or e-mail me and I will get with you. I can really understand why the heavyhitters can and do get frustrated. Try sending a pleasant note along with your request. Just my thoughts.

Another thing thats a real inconvience for growers in Canada. When you send a self addressed stamped bubble pack with US postage on it, it won't work in Canada. I'm lucky I make several trips across the border and drop the ones with US postage on them in a mailbox in the US. But I know this happens quite frequently to us Canadain growers. Notice I didn't call myself a heavyhitter. Just joking Jerry

I always send a copy of e-mail correspondence or a note to the grower, they know exactly who's asking. I always make sure there is sufficient postage on the bubble, or if it's going to Canada I put $2 in there to cover it. I almost always, ran out for 1 day, put coin envelopes in the packet to help the grower replace what he/she may have sent me. I try my best to always say "thank you" and that I appreciate it. If I can, computer crashed and I lost all my e-mail addresses, I send a thank you e-mail once I get the seed. I'm hoping to get the rest, that sent a return address on the envelope, a note in the mail by spring to say thank you.If a grower sends me seed and requests some in return I do it, even if it means pulling off my trade list.
Does that cover all the bases?

But if it's a trade, seed for seed or any other type of barter, it should be done expediently by both parties.
The issue I stated at the beginning of this post has to do with a kid(anything below 25 is a kid to me). I sent seed agreed upon in a trade the next day. I've gotten nothing in almost 3 weeks and I get no reponse to four e-mails. Kid said he really wanted some seed I had so I traded him. Won't go that route again, try to help someone out. Ingrate.
There are also some out there that try to take advantage of the less experienced and make ridiculous requests for some seed they have. Or make ridiculous offers for your seed, and attempt to misrepresent what they're offering. For those that use that type of mentality when trading, they will find themselves progressively annoying enough people for the word to spread. Then who will they trade with?

Thanks Jerry for explaining to everyone that unlike the people we get to know over BP.com that the Heavy Hitters did it by phone and weighoffs...They got to know each other first...It makes good sense to add a letter of introduction with a seed request. I think that many forget this when they send letters to heavy hitters since any seed they send back would be considered an honor to have. This will be my third year growing AG's and I still post my questions under the Newbies forum...because guys like you with twenty years under your belt wouldn't be interested in my type of questions...Jerry your a Heavy Hitter! WAIT TIL NEXT YEAR

So. Maine

Weighoff's, seed drying, Thanksgiving, Christmas shopping, working 5,6,7 days a week. Some growers take a much needed break from pumpkin stuff this time of year.I know severial growers (myself included) who put all seed request aside until AFTER New Years. Some growers are flooded with hundreds of request for seeds. It takes time , plus the 2003 season is 4-5 months away.
