I just rebuilt my old chicken coop, and was planning on getting about 5 laying hens this spring, do you think they will pester my plants? Seriously, I spent a ton of time and money rebuilding that dang hen mansion, complete with a bay window, and chickey doors!

Kyle, you forgot to mention cracklins, cornbread and black-eyed peas..... Gads, if you have a fence around your patch I wouldn't worry about the chickens getting in. Feed em plenty of layin' mash and cracked corn!!

Gads, I wouldn't let them into your patch during the growing season. Though they may or may not bother your plants & fruit, they will get in there & scrath around in the dirt looking for insects, & possibly damage buried vines. I keep mine out with 3' chicken wire held up with 5' pieces of 1/2 inch rebar...& the fence wouldn't look bad if the rebar was painted.

Try a roving chicken tractor. It is an outdoor movable chicken pen with a mini-coop. Fully enclosed with chicken wire or 2" x 4" wire mesh. Allows bugs to go in but they don't come out. It is made so that every few days you just move it to fresh grass and the old area has had the fertilizer all ready deposited.
I do not have one of these but would like to put one in the patch between the plants.
I have also heard that ducks, since they do not have pointed beaks, will help reduce the bug population. I'm not sure on that.

You do NOT, I repeat do NOT, want to eat crow. They feed on road kill possum, cats, dogs, rats, woodchucks, you name it. Even a backwoods good ole' boy is hard pressed to eat that mangy good fer nothin buzzard wannabe. Wild turkeys? Tons of 'em. Between them and the deer I don't know who gets chased out of my yard the most by my 13 dogs. You wanna try some good southern cuisine? Fried snapper turtle.....and crawdads are great too, just takes a bucket full to get much to eat. Won't be much longer and the southern boys are gonna be nippin at your heels with them big ole' punkins'. And always remember one thing....the quickest way to make a southerner mad enough to pull out the buckshot is to make inbred jokes. Ya'll come back now hear?

crows have been identified as a carrier of the West Nile Virus, an encephalitis type virus that has killed at least 14 people to date. Crows have been found to be prime carriers of the mosquito borne disease because of their highly sensitive nature to the virus and their roosting habits. Blood tests are currently being conducted throughout the East but this disease will continue to be a concern due to the crow's migratory nature. Having said all this, I believe the crow deserves our admiration and should be considered more than just a nuisance bird by hunters. The crow is the most intelligent of all birds in North America. As such, they can be a challenging and worthy adversary that, kept under control, are a welcome part of nature's complex tapestry. Based on the outcome of man/crow conflicts throughout history, the crow will no doubt be around when we are gone.

i like crows,we feed them all winter.they nest in the woods next to our house..for the record i'm not a hunter but have no problem with hunting.. responsibly..west nile virus now thats going to be a problem.i have 60+ bats living in my house i hope they don't get it.

To resolve the problem I think I see why not cross a duck and a chicken for a chiduck. The chiduck would eat both broadleaf and grass of the single blade variety. The kids would love this as there would be no hybrid eggs they had to eat. Would leave less grease in the pan and confuse the hell out of the neighbors. The boys South of the Mason Dixon line would'nt know the difference after a snort of their homade hooch. We could sell them as patch fixers aledged to make chicken like droppings while doing their gobble up bad stuff act.

as mammals, i believe bats are also succeptible to the west nile virus. i work for our health dept., so this stuff is part of my job. there was a point late this summer where it seemed like the bats were just dropping like flies (we have to submit them for rabies testing). they were coming back negative for rabies, so we're kind of figuring that they were dying of WNV.

thats terrible news..we have a huge colony of bats that come back every year, have babies on one side of the house then the spread out to the other corners during summer..needless to say there are no mosquitoes

IVE HUNTED AND KILLED CROWS AND TURKEYS AND BELEIVE ME..THE CROW IS A LOT SMARTER..YOU HAVE TO PUT ON ALL OF YOUR TURKEY HUNTING CAMO..THEN COVER YOUR SELF WITH A CAMO TARP JUST TO GET A CROW TO FLY OVER..I ONCE HAD A GOOD PLACE TO HUNT CROW..I WOULD GET IN A OLD OUTHOUSE ON MY UNCLES FARM, TURN ON THE TAPE PLAYER AND SHOOT OUT OF THE HALF MOON ON THE DOOR..
