First female opened on the 845 Bobier this morning!!! The 5 lober was deformed and had seeds in it. See my diary for picture. Has anyone grown a fruit to maturity with this problem? Should it be culled eventually? It is 13 foot out on the main vine, but there is 2 more at 16 and 17 foot. Would they be better prospects, if the flowers were uniform?
Thanks for any advice.....Ben

yes, stop the insecticides and fungicides until the next 2 females open for you. I would cull the one with seeds in it now. also dont let that side vine fruit get very big or it may cause setting problems with your other 2 choices on the main. have no fear, my 1097.5 was set way out on the vine.......only about 75 square feet of plant past the fruit..if that...

I agree with Tom on the culling of the seedy main fruit and the side viner influencing main sets. I would, however, evaluate the insect+fungus pressures before stopping the insectisides and fungisides. No sense in risking the plant's health if the bug/pest pressures are high.....G

Tom,

Has it been your experience that stress caused by the I&D sprays (phytotoxicity) have caused aborts? I know that flowers of other plants can be damaged this way, but am new to AG's. On other varieites of pumpkins I never paid much attention.

I saw your flower Ben, it wasn't very pretty......... -:)
Tom's advice sounds fine, and I wouldn't worry about how far is the female on the main vine, 1025 Pukos was 18 feet appart from the stump, and many other over 1000 pounders were 16' and 17', one extreme sample is 972-98 Legras from Manitoba, it was 35' appart.

seeds in the female flower are caused by too much nitrogin, I have been following your story and u use a really lot of it. now is potash time
