I really tried to stay out of this discussion on seed...I'm not trying to make anyone mad,,but,,,I know it will make some mad..Everyone is bashing Bernie for tryting to sell his seed on ebay..Hell,,I see no difference in what he is doing than what Al or anyone else selling AG seed is doing..Lets face it,,a bubble pack= maybe 1.00$,,and $2 stamps ....1 +2=3$$$...So Al is putting $7 in his pocket..So why all the fuss about someone trying to re-coupe their money? We all know Bernie paid over 2,000$ for the collection last year...I cant afford to buy seed,,,so I'll stick to the ones my fellow growers will send me in a bubble for free...Please dont get mad at me everyone,,I just wanted to make that point....Thanks,,,Jeff

Looking for Bobier 845 and/or 723, Kuhn 712, Stelts 801, 869.5 Calai, 1020 Kuhn or other extraordinary AG seed to plant in 2003. I will not pay, but can trade some seeds from my 349 2002. Please email me with your address so I may send a self addressed bubble pack. Thank you in advance.

I am glad that so many growers want to share so readily from their seed collection for nothing in retun. Otherwise my request would just be mocked.

Yeah, there is a hint of sarcasm here because most of you unknowingly want to cut out the new guy that doesn't have a stock of seeds to trade. The simple response seems to be "go join a pumpkin growing org...network...etc."

I have received many seeds from BP.com (Thanks!) and generous growers at this site (Thanks again!). But with all the cost of fertilizer, soil amendments, misting systems and milk. I want to concentrate on the very best seed (that milk coment was a joke).

I have easily sent $200 to Waterman and close to that to the Dills (over the years) with only so so results, but at my expectations.

Now my expectations are higher. So, since Dill and Waterman do not offer the caliber of seeds I am looking for and I do not have a bank of seeds on par with these to trade, how do you suggest a 'newly serious' grower like myself gets top seed for the next growing season?

Oh, PandP did have the Bobier 845 last year for $30. It sold out fast (I doubt they all went to Bernie).

This is not directed at anyone and all sarcasm aside, is a sincere question/delema.
Thanks, Brent

Very good point Brent. I REALLY wanted to stay out of this but face it everyone, IT"S NOT GOING AWAY anytime soon. Many growers here seem to suport the "SEEDS FOR FREE" idea. Do I like this idea....Hell yes BUT I can see when paying for seeds is no big deal. Hey I'll trade 100 of my 392.5 seeds for one 845 Bobier, any takers??? Thats what I thought. Is there anyway I can get this seed for free???? NOPE! Someone out there has more than one of these 845's and they should trade me!!!! LOL face it where there is demand for something there will always be $. REMEMBER THIS GUYS.....we as a group, mostly free begging seed misers, offered as a group @ $2000.00 for the world record pumpkin.... well really its seeds. Some will respond saying that they were "trying to help Charlie" but MOST of us, including myself were expecting a pro rated portion of the seeds. Just something to chew on. One more thing guys, we are all (most of us) adults here I KNOW we can discuss this like adults.....We need to agree to disagree and thats about all we can do. Pumpkin growers are GREAT people willing to help each other and have a great time doing it...LETS KEEP IT THAT WAY!!!! MIke Frantz

I was prepared to get slammed for my email, but only nice email responses in return. A pleasant suprise.

I am heading to the big city for Thanksgiving, but will respond to emails individually when I return.

I just wanted to say thanks and wish you all and Happy Thanksgiving!

If someone puts a Bobier 845 in my face, you're dam* straight I'll pay for it. I'll pay well too. Money isn't the issue. I've got plenty of that. The issue is, if I pay for the Bobier 845, what percent should the seller (or me the buyer) send to Howard Dill? I don't mind paying at all. And, because of people like me, this sport will get pricey after the patent is out of the way. Is that wrong?

But I don't want Howard Dill to be left out of the transaction. That wouldn't be right. It is his patented work that is for sale. Bobier put work into it too. So did the hybridizers before him. Some of it was luck. Some of it was skill. All of it was work. All deserve reward.

If someone put's the money in your face, are you willing to say no? Maybe it's time to place a genetic blueprint on all the plants. The associations could demant seed at weigh-in. Then do a quick dna check. Everyone whose dna shows up get's recongnized or the pumpkin gets disqualified. Pretty easy huh?

Last I checked howard dill never grew a seed, the plants did.

I didn't send Darwin's estate a check when I was born with 11 toes did I?

Sure Howard Dill deserves credit, but surely we will not be sending his estate cash forever will we?

I think howard dill says it best for himself when he says:

Yours in Pumpkins,
Howard Dill

on his homepage.

Beside from my estimate and research here:

http://www.plantpatent.com/faq.html#faq002

Q. For How Many Years Does the Plant Patent Protection Last?
A. Beginning when the patent issues and continuing up to 20 years from the application filing date.

and howard dill's homepage here:

www.howarddill.com

We are very proud of our "Dill's Atlantic Giant" heritage spanning the last 20 years, and the enjoyment it has shown.

And being as his website has been like that for a bit, I think his patent may have expired.
