Try to fill in your growing area if possible.

There is a great and long posting on this question from a few years ago. (http://www.bigpumpkins.com/MsgBoard/ViewThread.asp?b=3&p=96111). I found it yesterday when asking a similar question. There are a lot of opinions on this matter and I think that if you really dig into and did your homework that there is some great science in this string that gets mixed up with too many opinions. That matter is complicated because there are a lot of variables. I think what we need to do is find a group of growers who are willing to do some controlled studies to get at the heart of the matter. If anyone is interested please let me know.

I don't think we'll ever come to a conclusive time of when vines need to be terminated. Too many variables to take into account(climate, plant size, soil differences, seed differences even from same pumpkin, different plant configurations, etc.).
Maybe the best way to decide is to have the growers of the heaviest pumpkins give data on when they terminate all vines by, and then we may have a good general idea of a good time to have vines terminated by.
Mike Frantz would be one of those to consider the data from(two posts above), as he's done quite well growing these pumpkins.
