Who is done with their patch prepwork? What did you add to your soil?

I just spent 3 hours tilling in about 12 yards of manure, 280 pounds of 90 score lime over my 1000 sq/ft patch. Now i think i will plant some winter rye because i was tilling up old sod and man it was rock solid and the rye should help losen it up some.

bEN,

Mine was done about 10 days ago. 10 yards of manure, 10 yards of potting soil, 100 pounds of gypsium, 25 pounds of 0-0-60 mirate of potash, 50 pounds of winter rye and buckwheat.

what is "12 yards of manure" doese mean in metrc system?
I just looked up in my dictionary, and it says 10,973 Meters,
wich make no sense at all to me. Is it used sometimes as a weigh measure? i dont get it.

thanks for explaining that.

Shuld one add fertilizer this time of year???? with the planting date next May? I am going to add lime, and hubby is dumping all our fresh horse poop on my patch daily. We measure our manure in either wheel barrows full or tractor buckets full.(: Love those little golden nuggets...LOL...but I never heard tell off adding potash or other fertilizer in the fall...or is just for fall crops...(which would freeze out here.) In fact it is snowing now...hard. As for that metric s**t, I never have gotten used to it...and I am from Canada. I use the old scale for everything...even temperature. I called a store inquiring about a bag of peat moss to store my carrots in, and when I asked how big the bag was he said something about it holding so many cubic something or others...I said what the heck is that and he told me again. I finally asked how tall the bag was in feet. LOL

lol, You can add fertilizers in the fall but if you see Drew only added potash which has no nitrogen in it. You dont want to add Nitrogen because it will leach out of the soil. I would just wait and add all the ferts. in the spring. I dont think if you added it now you would get any extra bonuses.

nitrogen will leach out of the soil faster than any other nutrient, but it's not like 100% of it's going to be gone in 6 months. pumpkins love nitrogen, but if you add a lot of manure like most of us do, you really don't need to suppliment with chemical nitrogen. especially if you're walking that fine line where you burn up a few leaves now and then.

In my opinion is better to improve your soil condition gradually and that means pH, texture, organic matter and slow move nutrients like K, P, Ca, Mg.
One addition in fall and another or even two in spring before planting affects less soil life than a strong spring one
