I use winter rye but Craig Weir was really talking up buckwheat in his featured grower chat. Check the chat transcript for details.
The winter rye roots really seem to keep the soil loose and allow air to get in.

Last year I used 2 1/2 buschels per acre this year I used 3 buschels for winter rye. I'm going to have bare spots and very thick areas, cause my kids helped me scatter the seed. Boy did they have fun....Tom
