Time for the next installment of my Top 10 Project. I finished the top 10 pests, wrote the article, and submitted to BigPumpkins.com for publishing in the next newsletter. Keep an eye out for it. It can also be viewed on my website. Onto business- now that the seed trade season is heating up, I thought I'd go for a list of the top 10 seeds of all time. So give me your ideal wishlist. Think past and present. Think fruit shape, color, size. What are the top 10 seeds of all time??? The more input I get from you, the better this article will be, so please help me out the best you can.

wish ya all had added the year of your seeds...maybe also why..would help some of us understand the why behind the choice...i think that most of us with a couple of grey cells understand that you don't go with the biggest, but, the seed(s) it came from...owen

hI JOE,

How about instead of the top ten seeds of all time, why not try and figure out the top ten crosses from pumpkins in 2002. That would be very informative and would give growers an opportunity to try and get some of those seeds before there hot next year.

At least as important is patch condition and feeding not to mention insect, wind and critter management and geographical location. Bet 'cha there is a common thread or two there too.

A point of contention here. How can one rate a plant(seed) that they have not grown? Seems to me that all we are doing is evaluating how a seed did once upon a time in someone else's patch. The AGGC has already done that!

This year, I had three "big name" seeds that grew "runts" in my patch. Why should I put them on a "all time best" list if they didn't do "squat" in my patch?

this is how big name seeds stacked up in our patch this year.
845 1097.5 and 550
801.5 807, and about 6 other fruit averaging 250 lbs or so
846 801 and 618
705 631 and 543
723 603, and 5 other fruit( gave up on it when nothing was set 8-1

Tom,
I see that the 723 didn't do "diddley" in your patch either.

Stan-
I see your point... but those of us who listed just did what joe asked for, your free to input as you interperate the question, or not.

It's just an opinion poll. I could say Hank Aaron was one of the greatest sluggers ever though I never saw him play couldn't I? The Baseball Encyclopedia has all the stats but I imagine our opinions would differ.

My first question Tom , Stan do you know fro sure that the 705 and the 723 where real. I had similar results with my 940-only 453lbs 845 pulled it planht never grew a good root system. 705 never germinated. Did have some succsess with the 455 only problem the both went down before the weighoff. I think in the has to look at the crosses and go with ones gut instinct.right now everyone growing has jumped on the 723 845 846 bandwagon pretty boring seed selection.:)

the 723 was far from a dog.......had I iced the blossoms the get them to set, The fruit could have been, very, very big......a side vine fruit that open pollinated was clocked growing 35 lbs a day with 4 other fruit on the plant. Piucking the last fruit on the 723 plant tomorrow, it should push the plant to 3000 lbs of production all after August 1.

mark,
They were real.....Dad blew the big on on the 705 8 weeks ago at mid 500 range.
