Pumpkin Grower

New York

Pumpkinbrat,
I saw your post regarding the Oswego weighoff. The young grower you mention that came in third was a hard guy to chat with, didn't want to talk pumpkins, genetics, etc...but he had one impressive pumpkin. Seemed strange for a guy who just grew such a big one. Maybe you know him because he lives right next to you, I think his name was Seth. BTW, I see you grew a couple 800+ pounders from your pictures on BP.com. I know you drove the 350 miles to Altoona with your one pumpkin instead of the hour trip to Oswego, what did you end up doing with your other big one? Let me know if you know the other grower from your town so I can inquire about seeds. Thanks and congrats on your good showing in Altoona!

My other pumpkin I took to Richers feeds. Which is about three miles from my home town. It had a weight of 800lbs. I don't have any growers near me that I know of. There is a grower I beleive in Poolville, New York. which is about 15 miles from me. His name is not Seth.I don't know the guy who won third place. I went to Oswego two years ago just to see what a Big Pumpkin weigh off is like. The people out there wouldn't give me the time of day. I feel the people out there kinda stick to there self and don't like to share ideas. This is my first year ever at entering a pumpkin. I chatted with a grower at Altoona that once did go to Oswego. He doesn't go anymore because he doesn't like the way the weigh off is ran.

I had a 1500 lber' but my Saint Bernard ate it. I was going to enter it in a weigh-off in Hawaii so I could be the biggest there. But that's OK cause now I hear they aren't fair there. Something about pineapples being used to add weight. Now I hear that all future big pumpkins are going to be DNA tested before they are weighed so no one can enter more than one in the $ round.

My 1460 was raised on Circus Do Do. It was mostly gray with white stripes. I was afraid to take it to the weigh off for fear it might squash my ego. On October 1st I packed it in five cubic feet of ice and bailed straw to retard the green. When we unpacked it Friday evening we had 2% protein pumpkin ice cream. Had to be. Who ever heard of squash ice cream?
